Loop System for Patrons with Hearing Loss
Waukesha Civic Theatre has installed an Induction Loop System in the Margaret Brate Bryant Civic Theatre to enhance the experience for patrons with hearing loss. This is one of the first hearing loop systems to be utilized in a public venue in our area. A Loop System works by interacting with a telecoil in a hearing aid that transmits sounds directly to the ear. Most hearing aids have a telecoil that can be activated by your audiologist. Users will be better able to understand the dialogue, punch lines, and lyrics. There is no background noise or room echo.
Several people and companies were involved in the installation at Waukesha Civic Theatre. Local audiologist, Dr. Meredy Hase, is the owner of Hearing Services Limited in Waukesha, WI. She has been providing Audiology Services and hearing aids for all ages for more than thirty years. When she was approached by Dr. Juliette Sterkens, audiologist and loop advocate in the Oshkosh area, and other people involved in the hearing loss industry as well as those with hearing loss and asked if she would like to be a part of this project, her immediate response was, “How can I help? and What do you need?" When told that money was a huge issue on this project, she graciously agreed to finance the cost of the equipment.
Installation and securing the right equipment was another big step. Scott and Kim Leonard at Professional Audio Designs in Wauwatosa, WI as well as Richard McKinley of Contacta, Inc of Holland, MI stepped in to handle this part. Richard has spent several years working with systems that can enhance the hearing of those with hearing loss. Scott and Kim took the time to learn, train and perfect this installation process. Another big plus for the Waukesha area! Larry Waters, owner of Waters Color And Design Carpets in Waukesha, also lent his time and talent to help with the installation. The project was coordinated by Tami Klink of Strategic Business Solutions in Wales, WI.
