
Academy at Civic Theatre (ACT) offers arts education programs for ages 4-19, there are classes in improvisation, comedy, character development, dance, and acting. Classes are held over Spring and Summer school breaks. WCT is expanding the program to quadruple the number of classes offered over the next four years. Students who are flexing their creative muscles in the present also are developing into a population of citizens with a heightened sense of cultural literacy. These same students will be future participants in the theatre, patrons, donors, volunteers, and ambassadors for the arts.
ACT’s Annual Sketch Comedy Show

Each class is a new adventure! Through fun games and creative exercises, students will embark on a fun-filled romp through the world of their own imaginations. From police officers to pirates to panda bears, each week will bring new characters and new surprises. A great introduction to the world of theatre, so join in the fun!
Experience the thrill of being an actor as you engage in highly interactive and engaging exercises leading up to your performance of a short scene. Students will learn core stage skills like projection, listening and movement while working together as an ensemble cast.

Firsthand filmmaking fun! Memorize and perform original scripts in one hilarious and intense week. Be a part of this outrageous WCT tradition! Students will receive a dvd copy of the work the day of the screening for family and friends.
Knowing how to audition well can be the difference between getting the part or going home. Audition Technique is a great tool for the serious young actor. The class will cover everything from the basics of audition etiquette to monologue selection to the different types of auditions you may encounter. Students will memorize and perform a short monologue for the final class.
How do they do it? How does everything come together onstage for a show? Get your answers here as students learn all of the elements that go into producing a show. From lighting to sound to make up to set design, discover how many offstage efforts go into making the magic happen onstage.
NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Using text from Shakespeare, students will learn to use rhythm and word to create a memorable, driven character. Though the class will cover much of Shakespeare’s work, the primary focus will be on Twelfth Night. Students will perform a short scene on the final day of class.
Through fun games and imagination exercises, students will work to create their very own original characters. But that’s only half the fun! These characters will then be written into an original, world premiere play that the students will perform on the last day of class! The only requirement is an active imagination!
Put on your dancing shoes for these two weeks to express and challenge yourself through the art of dance. Routines will challenge participants while placing an emphasis on storytelling elements.
Try acting without a script!!! Improvisation is an outstanding way to develop better communication, listening and performing skills. Through highly interactive games and exercises, students will learn to think more quickly on their feet and make stronger, clearer choices on stage. They will also be laughing a lot because this class is loads of fun!

On Day 1 we have nothing. No script, no characters, no settings, nothing. Only ideas. Through brainstorming, games and focus exercises the students themselves will put together a short play. They will write, produce, memorize and perform their original script. The students create the characters, the costumes, the setting, and everything else. This is a challenging and extremely fun way to learn about all of the different components that go into bringing a play to life. The final class will be a showcase performance of the script for family and friends.
Gotta sing? Then join us for this fun-filled class! Students will acquire valuable voice and movement skills as they learn the tunes of Broadway. The final class will be a small, informal performance for friends and family.
On Camera Acting!
This fun-filled class will take you into the incredible world of puppets as you design and build your own. This is a unique opportunity to learn the skill of theatrical puppetry. Students will keep their puppets at the end of the class.
“Wow that punch looked so real!” “How did he fall like that without hurting himself?” Learn the precision, focus, and discipline required to bring stage combat to life. From pratfalls to pulling punches, learn some of the stage secrets used to make the action on stage look as real as possible.
Learn how to create and perform your own stand up routine from local professional comedian Lee LA Lycan.
Unlock the writer within! This class will not only develop the students’ writing skills, it will encourage them to look at comedy from a different perspective. Throughout the course, each student will write and develop their own sketch.
Marcella (Marcy) Kearns is a Milwaukee-based actor and teaching artist. She has served as an instructor for First Stage, Milwaukee Rep, and Metropolis and on the education staff of Milwaukee Shakespeare and Studio Arena. An advocate of arts in education, she freelances as a partner with What You Will (www.wearewhatyouwill.com). She holds an MFA in Acting from the University of South Carolina and completed a Fulbright Fellowship in Vienna, Austria.
Doug Jarecki is the Education and Outreach Administrator for Waukesha Civic Theatre. Apart from his duties at WCT, Doug enjoys an acting career both onstage and onscreen. He has performed in theatre companies throughout the area, including Next Act, In Tandem, Renaissance Theatreworks, First Stage, and Milwaukee Shakespeare Company. He also has an extensive children’s theatre background, working with such companies as M&W Playhouse, First Stage, Discovery World and the Milwaukee Children’s Theater Company. He also co founded Kidsplay, a touring children’s theatre company that performs highly interactive and original shows.
